Everyman Theatre >>> Liverpool’s iconic building masterfully restored, expanded and handed to the community

The Everyman wins Haworth Tompkins the 2014 Sterling Prize.

The glass façade is partly concealed behind large rectangular panels portraying the silhouettes of random Liverpool citizens, truly making this building one with which the community can identify.

Almost 10 years in the making, the building replaced a theatre on the same site, which opened in 1964 in a converted 19th-century chapel. It had become a much-loved institution, having launched the careers of local heroes.
The auditorium is built from grubby bricks, recycled from the original chapel, while new walls of rough cast concrete project out into the foyer.
With a limited budget, the architects were charged to make a building that should keep intact the spirit and soul of the old theatre, with its  “warmth, earthiness and democratic humanity” of the old theatre.
